I thought manual climate controls were gone.

It was so weird being in the Versa with manual climate controls. Not seeing a temperature, manually having to control fan speed. I can't even remember the last time I've been in a car with these outside of the Versa. (Car pictured is not a Versa)

I'm sure just old, Cars have had automatic climate control for a while.

My Mazda still has these and I wouldn't have it any other way. It's easier to spend two seconds adjusting a dial than fiddling around with silly buttons, touch screens, and infotainment systems.

Meh. I just spent a small fortune on a car with similar controls as the one in the picture, with one omission. It doesn't have an AC button.

But once you turn it on and set the temperature you don't have to do anything. If you want it warmer, you touch the temperature control button knob until it's warm/cold enough, fan speed adjusts itself.

My MS3 has auto climate, and I treat it thusly: Too cold? Turn temp to 76*. Too hot? Turn temp to 72*.

It's a fancy hot/cold dial. Nothing more.

Yes, but you can't remember the last time you've even been in a car with the manual switches?

Where do you live? Beverly Hills? Valhalla?

Not really. My (other) car has automatic climate control, and there's just this big up/down button to change temperature. It doesn't get easier than that.

I'd rather have the dials. Why? Because gloves in the winter that's why.

Well, I'm 14 (I know, so young), so I've only been in modern cars. See? That explains it.

All three cars at my house have manual climate control.

'08 Vue has three knobs.

'04Silverado has two knobs and two sliders for the temperature.

'94 Safari has three slider things.

Shit, I've sat in a bunch of newer cars that have manual climate control. Unless you get up into high, leather clad trim levels, most cars still do.

Did it have power windows? Someone here just bought a Versa and it has one of those manual window adjusters thingys.

No, it had power windows thankfully. I didn't use them much though because I was using the AC.

Base economy cars. I think the Versa S still does. Our rental was an SV though.

There was a time, young whippersnapper, a time your grandparents can tell you about, when you had to get up from the couch to change the TV channel. If you wanted to watch a show, you had to watch when it was on. If you wanted to see a movie, you had to go to a "theater," and if you wanted to play a video game, you were SOL.

I prefer these controls. I drive a LOT of newer cars at work. Because we install leather, we sometimes have to park the cars outside and run the heat — it helps form the leather to the cushions. Sometimes I have to get in a car and drive after it's been sitting, idling with the heat on for 30 minutes. With a knob, the transition from heat to A/C is immediate. With the push buttons (or worse, those motherfucking touch-screen-only jobs), it often takes a few minutes to begin to cool. If there's a car that absolutely needs to be delivered quickly, it will be delivered by someone sweating through his shirt. And honestly, would you want to see a large, sweaty old man getting out of your car right after you had new leather upholstery installed to the tune of $1000-1500?

The knobs are intuitive, easy to use, and less likely to break as the car ages. Knobs for all!

At scale how expensive is it really to include power windows? Has to be a few dollars when we are talking thousands of Versa's being made., I think this is stupid.

The Subaru's got a separate vent lever that actually opens a vent to outside air. Adjustable flow using car speed.

Both of my "regular" cars have manual controls. '05 Town & Country and '07 Matrix. Neither are base models. My Scout has but one option. Heat on or heat off.

It's one of these (Peugeot 205 GTi). Mine is LHD though. Late 80s European market cars very rarely came with AC. The 1989 BMW 325i Touring I just shipped to the Texas? No AC from the factory.

Heh, at least the Scout gives you an option. My '56 MGA doesn't have a heater, but with all the heat soak coming through the firewall, it's still 'heat on' all the time.

Funnily enough, our 'nice' car (my wife's Mk6 VW Golf) has manual controls, while our beater (my 1996 Volvo 850R wagon) has dual-zone automatic climate control.

The Volvo 850 is the only car that I'm aware of that offered manual dual-zone climate control. The lower-spec models without automatic climate control kept the dual-zone heater box, and just had two manual heat/cool controls. Weird.
